I find that most people who review this film are hung up on the premise, special effects, gadgets and the many cinematic references. It’s my personal opinion that the film uses “artiforg” repossession as a backdrop for the true conflicts, such as the cognitive dissonance we face in certain occupations and/or the desensitization it takes to do our jobs.

For example, we know that Remy was in the military, where dehumanization of the enemy is common practice. If an institution can convince its subjects that the enemy is deserving of cruelty, violent acts are subsequently less difficult to perform on another human being. So, it makes perfect sense that an individual like Remy has been socialized into doing his line of work. It’s not apparent to Remy how atrocious his occupation is until he starts to recognize 1) his role in the violence and how it affects other people in his life and 2) what it feels like to be on the receiving end of a system that profits on suffering and loss.

This, in itself, is a commentary on how corporations profit in our society today. Pharmaceutical companies would be out of business if our society had easily accessible cures for modern infectious diseases. It’s necessary for a population to treat symptoms rather than solve a problem at its roots. “Artiforg” sale and repossession is the same thing. Thus, as a gear in the machine, Remy has to decide for himself whether or not his line of work is ethical.

That’s where the cognitive dissonance comes into play. I think the film did an excellent job of portraying. The metaphor here is are we correct in criticizing corporations while supporting them and working for them (I guess you could say it would be hypocritical then for this movie to be made, mass produced and distributed by a corporation also)? Now, I keep hearing a lot of criticism about the movie once Remy experiences (spoiler) the Neural Net reality (or alternative virtual consciousness) in which he and Beth repo one another, kill Frank, bomb the place and run away to some tropical paradise. All this complaining about the many cinematic references is kind of ridiculous, considering we know that this is Remy dreaming, essentially. Are anyone’s dreams completely original all the time? I know a lot of my dreams borrow from movies I’ve seen. I know a lot of books and movies borrow from other stories, too, which has been the case for centuries. Why is this so criminal now?

But anyway, Remy is (in my opinion) experiencing a fantasy while distracted from physical reality. That was the whole point of the Neural Net product in the first place. It’s a means of deterring terminally ill people from experiencing painful deaths and/or soothing retired folks in convalescent homes dealing with prolonged loneliness. Remy’s subconscious is borrowing from his vicarious experiences. It’s quite possible an individual like Remy has seen movies like Old Boy, 2001 Space Odyssey and The Matrix. Why not?

Anyway, I think this was a great film with a lot to say and it resonated with me quite well. I think what people look for in movies these days spoils a lot of the major ideas. If you get caught up in “the ending” or working your damnedest through copious Google searching to find blurry images of yet unrevealed movie monsters, you’re not enjoying movies anymore. You’re beating them to death with a spoiled outlook on plot, cinema and characterization. Repo Men is going to be misunderstood, in my eyes, for a long time because of this. Sorry so many of you let that happen.

I rented this film expecting a good thriller but I almost turned it off after an hour because nothing thrilling had happened! To give it its due, it did improve at that point but, as has been mentioned in other reviews on this site, it was too predictable.

For me, the first hour was dull and could’ve been condensed to about 10 minutes and the final half an hour didn’t do enough to rescue it. It was acted well enough but I didn’t believe the relationship between Jessie and Rob – they just didn’t seem like a couple (maybe it was their looks, I don’t know).

Anyway, I certainly wouldn’t recommend this to anyone looking for an “edge of the seat” thriller that’ll keep you guessing ’til the end cos they’d be sorely disappointed.

Being a fan of the 80′s television series as a child, naturally I was pretty excited 3 or 4 years ago when i heard about a possible ‘A-Team’ feature film. Back then, I believe the rumoured cast included Bruce Willis and possibly Jim Carrey??? The years went by until about a year ago I saw a picture of the current A-team cast in “EMPIRE” magazine….what – no Mr T????? OUTRAGE!!!

I was disappointed in the least and my eagerness and enthusiasm for an “up-dated’ version of a beloved classic jumped out the window and died! Then, 2010 roles upon us and the trailers for the film hit the internet and cinemas but still – it didn’t grab me. It looked tacky, un-original(well it’s Hollywood and a re-make so it still kind of is), with totally over-the-top and overblown Micheal Bay-style action sequences and not a single trace of any whit or plot visible!

If it was not for my Dad (also an avid fan of the show) offering to pay for me, I probably would not have bothered seeing the film. Well…not at the cinemas anyway.

We watched the film last night and i have to say, it was definitely better than I was expecting. It was actually and surprisingly very good! I was fearing all my fond memories of my favourite characters such as ‘B.A. Barachus’ and ‘Mad Murdoch’ would be spat on and watered-down into ironic cliché versions of what they originally were – instead, I was treated to a clever and accurate modernisation of one of the best T.V. shows of the 80′s!

The main concept for A-team to work is all about a successful interpretation of the characters. If the characters aren’t right – the film will fall flat and will only be branded as A-team by name alone, nothing more than a cash-in on the name. Fortunetly the characters, although played by different actors – are successfully updated and portrayed and still somehow feel the same as the originals with the humour and witty dialogue still there in spades!

The cast did a fine job in their respective roles especially South African actor Sharlto Copley as ‘Howling mad Murdoch’! He was hilarious and out of all the cast – resembled his 80′s counterpart most accurately in his appearance. Quinton Jackson, although not quite Mr T – still managed to portray a descent portrayal of ‘B.A’ and although I don’t recall him saying his famous catch-phrase more than once, he made up for it with his witty tattoos! I thoroughly enjoyed the back-story to his fear of flying!!!

The action scenes (as obvious from the trailers) are pretty big and impressive which is normal by today’s standards. Lot’s of explosions, gun/fist fights and airplane chases a-plenty fill the plot (yes…there is actually a plot) in nicely. None of the action sequences are drawn out too long and although some of the scenes suffer a bit from a little too much CGI, shaky-cam and quick cuts making visibility difficult and a bit muddled, still doesn’t take away from the film’s overall entertainment value.

The plot is not overly complicated but it IS there and it is not completely dumbed-down and insulting to the viewers intellect. A perfect balance of action, story and humour make A-team a brilliant and successful up-dated film adaption that successfully brings The A-team into the new millennium yet doesn’t tread over the original.

Thankfully the best bits aren’t shown in the trailers and the film is most deserving of at least one more sequel!

I pity the fool who doesn’t enjoy this film!

**SPOILERS** The made for TV movie “The Wronged Man” starts where it ended on September 19, 2003 at Louisiana State Correctional Facility. It’s then that we see 44 year-old Calvin Willis played by Mahershalalhashbaz, the longest name in the Bible, Ali getting his first breath of freedom after spending over 20 years behind bars. That’s 20 years of freedom that Calvin lost, and would never get back, for a crime that he didn’t commit!

Besides Calvin’s wrongful incarceration we also get to see the person who did just about everything, moving heaven and earth, to prove Calvin’s innocence paralegal Janet “Prissy” Gregory, Julia Ormond. Prissy almost by accident took over Calvin’s case when her good friend and boss defense attorney Graves Thomas, Danny Vison, was struck down and killed by a lighting bolt while on a fishing trip!

Not at first all that convinced of Calvin’s, who’s serving a life sentence for the brutal rape of an 11 year old mentally challenged girl, innocence Prissy felt that if the late Graves Thomas felt that he was innocent that was good enough for her. As Prissy uncovered facts that the jury at Calvn’s trail were not made aware off, by the local D.A keeping it from them, she went on what turned out to be a 20 year-for a better word-crusade in overturning his conviction. Something that at first Calvin was anything but willing to cooperate with Prissy in feeling that her only interest in his case was just an ego trip on Prissy’s part. How wrong Calvin turned out to be!

Heart wrenching true story of how a totally Innocent man went through hell for over 20 years losing everything he had, his freedom family and dignity, until the DNA evidence, that wasn’t available at the time of his trial and conviction, proved him innocence.

During his stay behind bars Calvin’s wife Micelle, Lisa Arrindell Anderson, divorced him and remarried having a child with her new husband. This drove Calvin almost suicidal taking it out on Prissy from keeping the truth of Michelle’s marriage and new born child from him. Being a convicted child rapist didn’t help Calvin either making him a target or marked man for every convict in the “joint” who held him beneath contempt and wanting to do a number on him. It was later that Prissy heard about former O.J Simpson’s defense team lawyer Barry Sheck’s newly formed Innocence Project and finally a ray of light broke through the dark clouds that hampered her all those years in finding Calvin innocent. It was the Innocence Project that in the end convinced-through DNA evidence-the court that Calvin was in fact was railroaded into prison! Still it took some two years and a $12,000.00 fee that Prissy and Calvin’s family needed all the help and personal contributions, mostly from the local church, that they could get to come up with!

P.S DNA evidence which was in its pioneer stage at the time of Calvin’s trial and conviction has since proved to be the ultimate evidence in finding persons unjustly convicted of crimes, like himself, innocent beyond any reasonable doubt. Calvin became the 138th person, in 2003, to be found innocent of a crime he didn’t commit because of the DNA evidence that the researching Innocence Project provided for him. Many of those found Innocent through DNA evidence over the last ten years were on death row awaiting execution. We can only wonder just how many more persons who ended up losing their freedom, like Calvin Willis, as well as their lives, by being executed by the both State and Federal Government, would have been exonerated of their “crimes” and given the freedom that was taken away from them if publicly supported groups like the Innoence Project was around back then.

Since his release from prison Calvin Willis has become an major advocate for prisoners rights in him knowing that many of those, like himself, convicted by our “perfect” justice system are far less-in many cases- guilty then those overzealous and unbending enforcers of the law who sentenced them.

I’ve never seen the 1981 original version of Clash of the Titans. I wasn’t originally planning on seeing this new updated version either. Going by the previews, this looked like nothing more than a CGI-fest…which is what it pretty much ended up being. To quote Sam Worthington from various interviews, it’s basically him “in a skirt with a rubber sword, killing monsters”. If you’re expecting anything more than that, then yes, you will probably be disappointed.

Some of the cast manage to make the most of what they’re given to work with. Having not seen Sam Worthington in anything prior to this film (except Terminator Salvation), I don’t really have anything to compare his acting to. He was good in Terminator Salvation and he’s good in this as well (despite the occasional slip-up of his accent). He serves his purpose as Perseus, playing the action hero well enough. His interaction with the humans who accompany him on his journey is probably the most entertaining part of the film. Mads Mikkelsen, who was a memorable villain in Casino Royale, actually gets to play a fairly decent good guy in this film (Draco). Sure, it’s the role of the typical grumpy guy (who’s reluctant to follow the “saviour” and is a bit of a bully) teaching the hero how to fight and who eventually comes around to respecting the hero and ending up on good terms with him…but Mads manages to make his role a bit more than a cardboard cutout, thankfully. The other men who accompany Perseus aren’t too bad either (they do provide a bit of humour), but they’re not given much character development at all. Actually, there’s very little development for any of the characters.

As far as the gods are concerned, they’re basically just a bunch of folk who stand around in Cloud City (I mean Olympus) and talk. Liam Neeson isn’t given a whole lot to work with as Zeus (shining in his silver armour as brightly as Marlon Brando did in the original Superman movie wearing his tinfoil costume). Ralph Fiennes, while good, is kind of irritating with his raspy voice as Hades (though, thankfully, that goes away by the end). The rest of the gods have jack squat to do or say.

I really didn’t like Jason Flemyng’s satyr character. Alexa Davalos pretty much just plays the damsel in distress in the movie and leaves very little impression as Andromeda. Gemma Arterton (as Io), however, proves to be the most successful female character in the movie. As a sort of angel on Perseus’s shoulder, she guides him, teaches him and actually proves *useful*. Her and Worthington work well together/have good chemistry and I enjoyed watching the two of them share scenes. I was happy with how they ended up in the film.

As for the FX, the previews basically give it all away (Clash of the CGI might have been more befitting a title for the film). Perseus fights giant scorpions, Perseus fights the Kraken and Perseus fights Medusa. As large-scale as the Kraken was, I personally enjoyed Medusa more. The fight with her proved to be the most interesting of the many fights in the film. I liked the ‘look’/design for her and I also really enjoyed Pegasus, the flying horse.

I’ll just come right out and say it: the movie has many a flaw. The story isn’t great, the pace is off, the writing is slapdash and most of the dialogue is sketchy at best. While the movie does try to get across a message, it comes through in a somewhat haphazard sort of way. Having said that, if you go into this film not expecting much more than a Monster Mash of the Titans…then hopefully it should prove to be entertaining enough.

Crap of the Titans? Not quite. But at the same time, it’s kind of forgettable. As Worthington describes it, it’s a “popcorn flick”. Take from that what you will.

If you want to pay attention, you can catch the allegories to real-life situations equally involving privacy of citizens, and trusting the media and government. However, in essence it is a fun movie about robots being used to take over society. An independent film with a very high production value and excellent special effects. The robots, especially the “Reapers” are extremely well done. Very good performance by Adrian Paul as the Department of Homeland Defense Agent. I definitely recommend this movie for sci-fi fans.

I am really a fan of Kathrine Higle, she’s really really beautiful and classy. But honestly, she needs to reconsider her choice of movies or change her whole movie surrounding, because obviously whoever is getting her into those silly movies is lame and has no creativity! In the last three movies that I saw for her (27 dresses, ugly truth and this one) the lame stories are the same, the filming techniques and direction and exactly the same, the lame and silly jokes, and the shallow comedy is exactly the same. The only thing she’s changing is the pretty boy and the plot (not that any of the plots is actually meaningful to anyone in the world!).

I honestly think that what’s going on is just a regular Hollywood way to milk a fortune from a pretty face. but I really don’t know why would she put herself in this position, I mean she should’ve figured it out when she saw the first one or two movies! I can write a lot about this one but I don’t want to spoil it to anyone (not that I recommend this torture to anyone). But one last word to Kathrine, please walk out from whoever is putting these movies on your table, they don’t want the best for you, you have the face and character of a good movie star if you really put your mind into it

The only thing I learnt from this movie is that all satellites make bleepy noises in orbit when they’re being accessed.

The rogue mega-laser tearing up a street and a couple of buses was pretty funny, but the best humour comes when the plane is coming almost at street level over the city, people are running terrified, and a young woman stops to look over her shoulder. And we get a close up. She has a look on her face like she has mild indigestion. And then she continues running. Class.

If they’d pitched this as a comedy I might actually have bought it!

On a mission in Bolivia, a special CIA team is sent to kill a target. Special circumstance happen when they see kids in the target zone. After rescuing the kids, they put them on their rescue helicopter and wait for a different extraction. Then they see their helicopter hit with a missile, the kids are dead and they are suppose to be to. Now they must make their way back to the States in order to get their lives back and kill the one who set them up.

The Losers is based on a comic of the same name. It was a limited issued series that I had never heard of, but after seeing the film, wouldn’t mind checking out. The Losers is the type of action flick that surrounds itself with comedy and absurdity. You can’t really take the things that happen seriously and the film knows this, it also pokes fun at itself. The Losers consist of Clay (Jeffery Dean Morgan) the leader, characterized by a guy who wears suits with no tie. Roque (Idris Elba) second in command and a hot head. Jensen (Chris Evans) who runs tech and is the comic relief. Pooch (Columbus Short) the driver and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) the sniper expert. Each one has their own typical character trait, from rebel to wise-ass. The leader is obviously a troubled guy, who wants to do good and then you’ll have your quite but deadly assassin. Nothing new by an means, but going in expecting this, I had a fun time.

Zoe Saladana plays Aisha, the ass kicking chick who discovers they are hiding in Bolivia and offers them a chance to kill the guy who set them all up, Max (Jason Patrick). She tells them she will fund their operation as long as they get Max for her. Hmm, sounds like she has something of her own agenda. Can we trust her? We don’t know, neither do they. But they have nothing else to lose right? The villain as I mentioned earlier is Jason Patrick, whose last memorable film was 2002′s Narc. He doesn’t have much of a résumé, so I kind of found it odd that he was the villain in this piece. I don’t know how well he does comedy since it was pretty lacking here. You read that right, comedy. The villain is comedic and his routine is the straight face bit. His lines were delivered awkwardly for me and it really was an awkward performance.

I kind of expected more action from this film, it doesn’t wow you in anyway. The action sequences used are entertaining enough though, mainly because of who the characters are and what they do. Seeing Evans do some of the things seemed odd though, I didn’t expect him to have much of an action background for his geek/tech character. Although it was interesting watching him with having Captain American on in the back of my mind. The Losers doesn’t try to do anything new, instead it tries to simply entertain the audience that it is targeted at. To say this is a no brainer action film would fit it perfectly.

There are some twists and turns in the plot that I personally didn’t like. It makes sense, but for me I wanted things to turn out differently. I’m told that the same thing happens in the comic, but I didn’t want the dynamic of the group to be changed. I found myself disappointed with that aspect. The use of music in points is odd, Journey pops up in one sequence that might be the most memorable part of the film. That scene alone should tell you that the film is not just an action junkie film, but for people that want to laugh.

Can I recommend The Losers? I sure can, it seems to be getting beaten by the critics. I can see it from both sides of the looking glass. It’s far from perfect and has a lot of things that would make people question it. Some of the comedy doesn’t work, some people might not like the action sequences and again, the lead villain is odd. But I had a hell of a time watching it. The film is going to do very little business at the box office, mainly because there was no big name to draw people in and things that are based on anything that is not popular usually just has that small cult crowd. Kick-Ass was the victim of this last time, The Losers is the victim this time. I can totally see this film going into obscurity and no one remembering it. Which is a shame, because I liked it.
